Tips to Brighten Up a Dark Room

Table of Contents

Not every homeowner can be lucky enough to have a home that is full of natural light, however, using a few tricks and tips can help lighten up any dark room. The best part is that these tips require no remodeling! Simple design techniques can help create a space that looks lighter than it really is.

White Paint
While this tip may seem obvious, it is always best to start with the basics. Choosing a shade of white for your room instantly takes away some of the darker shadows that may be created by the architecture and darkness. If you dislike white, try choosing a different paint color that is still the lightest shade possible. Another tip is to paint your room’s ceiling white, especially if your room has a low ceiling. Even if your ceiling looks like it may have been painted white at one point (and now, years later, it is more of an off-white), a new layer of white paint will automatically brighten up the space and make your ceiling seem higher.

Visit a Sunny Place
Who says psychology can’t go a long way in home decor? Use artwork that depicts warm weather locations. Wall art including beaches, spring meadows, summer time adventures all suggest a lighter atmosphere than the photographs from last winter. Another great idea is to incorporate light colored flowers (dried, fake, or fresh) into your room. Any coffee table books that you have laying around should also reflect this theme.

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall…
Don’t fill up ALL of your space with artwork showcasing the summer! Save room for a few mirrors. Mirrors catch the light. Naturally, any light they catch is going to be reflected around the room to amplify the effect. Your room will instantly feel brighter. As long as your light sources are reflecting directly from the mirrors, your room won’t feel like a disco party.

White Tiles
Classy or cliche? There’s a reason white tile has remained a staple in interior design. Tile is linear and clean by default, and if the tile is a glossy white, it’s ideal for brightening up dark kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re worried about keeping your grout clean, try using a gray grout. This creates even more definition between your tiles, hides stains, and doesn’t overpower the brightness of the tile.

Keep it Simple
Clutter does absolutely nothing for dark rooms. In fact, it can transform an already dark room into a full blown cave. Keep things simple and take a minimalist approach when selecting which furniture and items to keep in your space. If guests are coming over, make an effort to sweep through the room to check for any clutter mistakenly left out. Keeping a tidy space allows your guests to focus on the other techniques you’ve used to brighten the room.
